Turn on Family Map

How a Coordinator enables the map for the Circle, and how each member opts in for themselves.

Family Map is off by default. Nothing shares until two people say yes: a Coordinator turns it on for the Circle, and each member chooses to share their own location. Two gates, both opt-in.

Step 1 — Coordinator turns it on for the Circle

  1. Open the app and go to Settings.
  2. Find the Family Map section.
  3. Flip Family Map for this Circle on.

That switch unlocks the feature for everyone in the Circle, but it doesn't share anything yet. If you ever turn it off again, every position and every history row for the Circle is deleted on the spot.

Step 2 — Each member chooses to share

From the same Settings page, every member sees a personal toggle: Share my location. Off until they turn it on. The first time someone enables it, we record a consent timestamp so the audit trail is clean.

While sharing is on you can also choose:

  • Share my battery percentage — so the family knows when to call before your phone dies.
  • Alert my Circle when my battery is low — fires one notification when your phone first drops below your threshold (default 10%). It won't fire again until your phone has been ≥30% and dropped back below.

What the family sees

Coordinators and Support Members see each other's last known place on the map at /app/map. If someone is inside one of their saved Places, the label reads "Sarah · at home" instead of raw coordinates.

Check-in Members never see the map. By design — their app stays the simple one-button screen.

Turning it off

One tap on either gate turns it off. When a Coordinator disables the whole feature, all stored positions for the Circle are deleted. When an individual disables their own sharing, their positions are deleted from every Circle they're in.

Next: Add and manage Places — turn raw coordinates into "at the gym".
